Tommy Hilfiger was born in 1951 in upstate New York, and he was one of the founders of a local upstate chain of clothing and record stores in the 1970s. In an effort to broaden his horizons and to give vent to his creative vision, in the early 1980s he began to design a line of preppy sportswear. This new line was very popular and he quickly expanded it to include a men’s line, and then a women’s line, followed by perfumes. The company grew exponentially during this period and in 1992 the company went public, bringing in more capital to develop a full line of accessories including Tommy Hilfiger eyeglasses frames.
